Bone Formation Flashcards
What happens in the zone of resorption?
CT and small BV invade
Calcified spicules are formed between dying chondrocytes
Bone is formed by osteoblasts on spicules
What are the layers of long bone formation?
Resorption Calcified cartilage Hypertrophy Proliferation Reserve cartilage
What happens in the calcified cartilage zone?
Cells enlarge
Matrix calcified
What happens in the zone of hypertrophy?
Cells enlarge greatly
Matrix is compressed into linear bands
What happens in the zone of proliferation?
Cells divide to form columns
Continue to secrete matrix
What happens in the zone of reserve cartilage?
Not a lot
What happens in the haematoma during bone fracture?
BV broken
Dead bone cells removed by macrophages and osteoclasts
What happens in the fibrocartilaginous callus?
New BV in Pro callus of granulation tissue Type I then type II collagen Hyaline sleeve Osteoblasts from perichondrium and endosteum invade
What happens in the bony callus of bone fracture?
Trabeculae appear
Intramembranous and endochondral ossification
What happens during bone remodelling of fracture site?
Cancellous to compact bone
What are the stages of fracture repair?
Haematoma
Fibrocartilaginous callus
Bony callus
Bone remodelling
