Bone Cysts Flashcards
Types of bone cysts
1- unicameral
2- aneurysmal
3- ganglion
4- hydatid
5-epidermoid
Def of unicameral bone cyst
Benign condition of bone cyst
Common age and sites of unicameral bone cyst
In children and adults
In the metaphysis of upper end of femur and humerus
Gross picture of unicameral bone cyst
Unilocular with smooth inner suface filled with clear fluid
It expands causing thinning of cortex
Microscopic picture of unicameral bone cyst
The wall Consists of collagen and osteoclast giant cell and new bone formation
Def of aneurysmal bone cyst
True to its name , expanding osteolytic lesion filled with blood
Common site of aneurysmal bone cyst
Diaphysis and metaphysis of long bone and vertebral column
Radiographic appearance of aneurysmal bone cyst
Ballooned out expansile lesion under neath periosteum
Gross picture of aneurysmal bone cyst
Large haemorrhagic mass covered by thinned out reactive bone
Microscopic picture of aneurysmal bone cyst
It consists of blood filled aneurysmal spaces of varable sizes some are lined by endotheliam separated by connective tissue septa containing osteiod tissue and osteoclast like multinucleated giant cells and new bone formation
Causative organism of Hydadit bone cyst
Echinococcus granulosus parasite
Describe ganglion bone cyst and inside it fluid
Small benign fluid filled cyst
Inside it there is sticky clear thick colorless jelly like material
Common site of ganglion cyst
Usually form on or near the joint or covering the tendon
Usually devolopes on the wrist but can appear on hand ankle or foot as a lump under the skin
Describe epidermoid cyst
Intramedullary unilocular cyst with squamous epithelium lining inside and filled with keratin
The mechanism of cyst formation is unknown
Common site of epidermoid cyst
Skull and terminal phalanges
