Bone and Muscle Classification Flashcards
Divisions of the Skeleton
Axial, Appendicular, Visceral (Splanchnic)
Axial Division
bones down the middle of skeleton
aka. skull, vertebrae, sternum ribs
Appendicular Division
bones of limbs
aka. humerus, pelvis, scapula, femur
Visceral (Splanchnic) Division
bones embedded in soft tissue
aka. Os penis, Os chordis, Os rostri
Bone Classifications
Long, Short, Flat, Irregular, Sesamoid
Long Bones
bones that are longer than they are wide
ex. femur, humerus
Short Bones
cube shaped w/ no marrow cavity
ex. carpals, tarsals
Flat Bones
two sheets of compact bone for protection
ex. scapula, pelvis, ribs, skull
Irregular Bones
have characteristics of more than 1 shape
ex. vertebrae
Sesamoid Bones
small bone attached/imbedded in tendons
ex. patella
Articular Processes
Condyle, Head (Neck), Facet
Condyle
knuckle like projection at distal end of long bones
ex. humerus, femur
Head
rounded articular process at proximal end of a bone
ex. humerus, femur
Neck
narrow region connecting head to shaft of a bone
Facet
flat articular surface, mostly on short bones
ex. carpals, tarsals
Trochanter
large blunt roughened process for muscle attachment
only on femur (greater and lesser trochanter)
Tubercle
roughened process
only on humerus
Tuberosity
small roughened process
Tibial Tuberosity-proximal end of Tibia
Ischiatic Tuberosity- on pelvis
Spine
prominent dorsal ridge of bone
ex. scapula
Crest
projecting structure or ridge on bone
ex. Iliac Crest
Malleolus
rounded boney projections of tibia and fibula at distal end
Foramen
hole in bone to allow passage of blood vessels and nerves
ex. pelvis, mandible
Fossa
hollow or depressed area
ex. scapula
Groove
long narrow furrow for tendons
Origin
proximal muscle attachment site
Insertion
distal muscle attachment site
Flexion
decrease in angle between two bones at a joint
Extension
increase in angle between two bones at a joint
Abduction
movement away from the midline
Adduction
movement toward the midline
Tendon
connective tissue that connects muscle to bone
Ligament
connective tissue that connects bone to bone
