Bone Anatomy Terminology Flashcards
Tubercle
Smaller rounded elevation, for example, the humerus has two tubercles, the greater tubercle and the lesser tubercle, at the proximal end of the bone I.e. the end that connects with the scapula. The greater/lesser tubercule are located from the top of the acromion laterally and inferiorly.
Tuberosity
Roughened rounded elevation, tends to be at the end of a long bone for attachment of a muscle or tendon
Spine/spinous process
Slender projection/ elongated process. An obvious example of this are the spinal vertebrae.
Trochanter
Large projection of the femur - there are actually 2, the greater and lesser trochanter
Condyle
Large prominence of rounded surface, often covered with articular hyaline cartilage
Epicondyle
Smaller prominence found above a condyle
Facet
Flattened surface for joint or muscle attachment, such as between spinal vertebrae
Crest
A ridge found on a bone, such as the iliac crest of the pelvis
Sinus
Hollow space, particularly prominent in the bones of the skull where they tend to connect with the nose
Meatus
Narrow Tunnel or Canal, such as the opening of the ear canal or nose
Fossa
Wide Depression on a bone e.g. The infra spinous fossa on the posterior surface of the scapula
Foramen
A hole or opening, such as the foramen magnum at the base of the skull.
Fissure
Cleft/ narrow slit
Notch
A large groove, such as the inter condylar notch of the femur
Auricular
Ear-shaped
