Bone Flashcards
what is the difference between endochondral ossification and intramembranous ossification
endochondral: bone forms as cartilage first then replaced by bone
intramembranous: bone is formed in a fibrous sheet like layers that resemble a membrane NO CARTILAGE PHASE
where in the bone does cell division and differentation take place
metaphysis
what is the outer surface of the bone refered to as
periosteum
what is the inner surface of the bone refered to as
endosteum
what do Osteoclasts do
responsible for the degradation (re-absorption) of bone
what do Osteoblasts do
responsible for the synthesis of bone
what are Osteocytes
osteoblasts that have become embedded within the bone -function as sensors of mechanic load
what do stromal cells do
produce growth factors for haemopoiesis
there is an increased loss of bone mass when women experience menopause, why
oestorgen levels drop therefore loss of inhibitory effect of oestrogen
what is osteoporosis
diseased characterized by low bone mass
cartilage is avascular, how does it obtain its oxygen and nutrients
diffusion
where are blood cells and platelets formed
`inside the medullary (marrow) cavity
bones have blood vessels, lymphatic vessels and nerves true or false?
true
what tissue are all bones derived from
mesenchyme
in bone where would you find lymphatic vessels in abundnace
the periosteum
