Bonding + structure Flashcards
What is an ion?
A charged atom or molecule
What happens to metals when they react?
They LOSE electrons from their outer shell
What type of charge do metals have?
Positive (+) charge
What happens to non-metals when they react?
They GAIN electrons in their outer shell
What type of charge do non-metals have?
Negative (-) charge
What do atoms need to become to have a full outer shell?
Ions
What is ionic bonding?
Joining metals + non-metals together
How are ionic bonds formed?
When atoms are transferred from metals to non-metals
What happens to the charge in ionic bonds?
Metal atoms LOSE electrons + become POSITIVELY charged ions
Non-metal atoms GAIN electrons + become NEGATIVELY charged ions
What is an electrostatic force?
The attractive + repulsive forces between charged ions
What is covalent bonding?
Joining non-metals + non-metals together
What is metallic bonding?
Joining metals + metals together
Why do giant covalent structures have high melting points?
Because of the many strong covalent bonds between atoms.
