Neutral
When neutral, nitrogen typically forms three bonds and has one lone pair of electrons. For example, in ammonia, nitrogen forms three single bonds.
Positive charge
When nitrogen has a positive charge, it can form four bonds and has no unshared electrons. Nitrogen with a positive charge still has a full octet.
Negative charge
When nitrogen has a negative charge, it can form two bonds and has two unshared electron pairs. For example, nitrogen can form amide anions, NH2-1, with two lone pairs on the N.
