BONDING DEFINITIONS Flashcards
Ionic bond
The electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a regular 3D lattice
Metallic bond
The electrostatic attraction between metal ions and delocalised outer shell electrons in a metal
Convalent bond
The electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and the nuclei of bonded atoms
Co-ordinate bond
A shared pair of electrons between two atoms, one atom provides both electrons
Bond enthalpy
The energy required to break one mole of a specific bond
Polar bond
A covalent bond in which ther is unequal sharing of bonding electrons
Electronegativity
The extent to which an atom attracts the bonding electrons in a covalent bond
Octet rule
When reacting atoms tend to lose, gain or share electrons to achieve 8 in it’s outer shell
Intermolecular
Between neighbouring molecules
Van der Waals
The attraction between induced dipoles in neighbouring atom/molecules/ions dispersion forces
Permenant dipole dipole
The attraction between the positive end d+ of the permenant dipole moment with the negative end d- of the permenant dipole of a neighbouring molecule
Hydrogen Bonds
The attraction between a lone pair of electrons on a very electronegative atom (F,O,N) in one molecule and a hydrogen atom in a neighbouring molecule, in which the hydrogen atom is covalently bonded to a very electronegative atom (F,O,N)
