Bonding Chemistry Flashcards

1
Q

What are covalent bonds (intramolecular bonds)?

A

the types of bonds between non metals where electrons are shared between 2 atoms. They can form covalent dative bonds where one atom shares both of the electrons

Q

What are ionic bonds?

A

type of bonding found between metals and non metals where electrons are transferred between atoms to form cations (positive) and anions (negative).

Q

Van Der Waals bonds

A

Van der Waals are the weakest type of force known. There are two types of Van Der Waals.
London Dispersion forces are intermolecular forces that occur between two atoms or two nonpolar molecules due to the motion of electron clouds.
Dipole-dipole interactions is when the negative end of a polar molecule attracts the positive end of another polar molecule. This attraction between these two molecules is known as the dipole-dipole force.

Q

Permanent dipole-dipole bonds

A

Occurs between polar molecules within a substance and causes the slightly positive poles to be attracted to the slightly negative poles which creates a strong electrostatic force of attraction

Q

Hydrogen bonds

A

When hydrogen is covalently bonded to a highly electronegative atom like fluorine, nitrogen or oxygen and forms dipole- dipole interactions with other molecules
