Bonding and Compounds Flashcards
Why are elements and compounds classified as Ionic?
Ionic Substances typically have a high melting and boiling points, Ionic compounds contain ions and are held together by attractive compounds.
Simple Molecular?
Simple Molecular substances only contain a few atoms
Giant Covalent?
They are substances at room temperature and have very high melting and boiling points and giant covalent bonds have no charge
Metallic?
One or more metal elements bonded to another element
a)
those ionic compounds which have high melting and boiling points most commonly have stronger attractions between the bonds.
b)
Not in a solid state
As liquids they do
and when they are in a solution where the ions are free to move
diamond and graphite
diamond has four carbon atoms
graphite has three carbon atoms
diamond has no free electrons
each carbon atom of graphite has one un-bonded outer electron
diamond and graphite structure
diamond has a tetrahedral arrangement
graphite has a hexagonal layered network structure
