Bonding Flashcards
What is a transition metal?
One that forms at least one ion with a partially filled d sublevel.
What is the valency of an element?
The number of atoms of hydrogen or any other monovalent element with which each atom of the element combines.
What is electronegativity?
The ability of an atom in a covalent bond to attract the electrons in the bond to itself.
What are Van Der Waals forces?
Weak, attractive forces between molecules resulting from the formation of temporary dipoles.
What are dipole-dipole forces?
Forces of attraction between the positive pole of one molecule and the negative pole of another.
What are hydrogen bonds?
Types of dipole-dipole attractions between molecules in which hydrogen is bonded to a small electronegative atom like oxygen, nitrogen or fluorine.
What is recrystallisation?
Starting off with a crystalline material, removing the impurities and making new crystals.
