Bonding Flashcards
What is ERRT?
Atoms take up positions in a molecule that minimise electron repulsion
What is hydrogen bonding?
Partially positive hydrogen is attracted to lone pair of electrons in another molecule (H-F, H-N, H-O)
What are van der Waals forces?
Instantaneous dipole induces a dipole in another molecule and the atoms are attracted to each other
What is electronegativity?
The ability of an atom to attract a shared pair of electron towards its nucleus
What is dative covalent bond?
A bonding pair of electrons come from one electron
What is covalent bond?
A shared pair of electrons?
How can you deduce a covalent bond?
They will have similar electronegativity
Why are metals ductile and malleable?
Layers can slide over each other
What makes metallic bonds strong?
- Greater charge (more delocalised electrons)
- Smaller ion
What is metallic bonding?
Electrostatic attraction between positive metal ions and the delocalised electrons
What makes ionic bond stronger?
- Greater difference in charges
- Smaller ion (more concentrated charge)
What is an ionic bond?
Electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions
Why do lone pairs repeal more than bonding pairs?
More compact
What is dipole- dipole?
Permanent dipoles attract other permanent dipole
Which increased strength of van der Waals forces?
Greater Mr (bigger surface area, more electrons)
