Bonding Flashcards
Ionic bonding
Ionic bonding is the force of attraction between oppositely charges ions, a lot of energy us required to break the force of attraction so they are considered strong
Covalent bonds
Covalent bonding occurs between two non metals, a lot of energy is required to overcome the forces of attraction which means they are strong
What is polar covalent
When the difference in the electronegativity values is not so great, the atom with the higher electronegativity value will have a slight negative charge.
What is metallic bonding
Is the force of attraction between the negative delocalised electrons and the positively charged ions
What are van der waals
These are a result of electrostatic attraction between temporary dipoles and/or induced dipoles caused by the movement of electrons in an atom and molecules
What bonding is found in metals
Metallic bonding
Covalent network solids
Boron carbon and silicon
Discrete covalent solids
Phosphorus and sulphur
Discrete covalent gases
Hydrogen, fluorine, chlorine, oxygen and nitrogen
Monatomic gases

Ionic compounds
Conducts in Molton or in solution
High melting points
Solids at room temperature because they are very strong forces of attraction
Covalent discrete molecular
Don’t conduct electricity
Low melting and boiling points
Liquids and gases at room temperature
