Bonding Flashcards
Why does graphene conduct electricity well? /5
-only 3 electron per carbon atom in bonds
-so one electron per carbon atom is delocalised
-so those delocalised electrons move throughout structure
-carrying electrical charge
-so graphite can conduct electricity
Why does reactivity of elements going down group 1 increase. /4
Reactivity decreases going down the group
-because outer electron shell is further from the nucleus
-so there is less attraction between nucleus and outer electron shell
-so atom loses electron more easily
Low melting/boiling point of something
-weak intermolecular forces
-don’t need a lot of energy to overcome
High melting/boiling point of something
-strong bonds
-lots of energy needed to overcome
Metals made up of
Ions
Non metals made up of…
Atoms
Do strong intermolecular forces exist?
NO
Electricity conducted in metal because
-made up of positive ions
-delocalised electrons
-so electrons can flow through metal
-giant lattice structure
Gas….?
Weak forces between molecules
Ions held together in ion by….?
-held together by electrostatic forces
-oppositely charged ions/atoms
-they attract
Independent variable…?
What we are keeping the same
Control variable….?
What we are changing
Dependant variable….?
What we are measuring
Conditions needed for non metals to conduct electricity
-dissolved
-molten/liquid
-so ions are free to move
