Bonding Flashcards
1
Q
Suggest, in terms of the intermolecular forces for each compound, why CBr4 has a higher melting point than CHBr3.
A
- CHBr3 has vdWs and permanent dipole-dipole forces,
- however CHBr3 is a smaller molecule and has less electrons than CBr4
- CBr4 also has stronger vdW forces
2
Q
Define electronegativity
A
the ability of an attom to attract an electron pair in a covalent bond
2
Q
Explain why CBr4 is not a polar molecule, despite the C-Br bond being polar.
A
- Symmetrical molecule (tetrahedral shape)
- dipoles cancel each other out
