Bonding Flashcards
What is an ionic bond?
electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions in a lattice
formulas of compound ions
Sulphate ion= SO4 2-
Nitrate ion= NO3 -
Nitride= N 3-
Carbonate= CO3 2-
Sulphide= S 2-
Phosphate= PO4 3-
Bicarbonate= HCO3 -
Hydroxide= OH -
Oxide= O 2-
Dative bond
shared pair of electrons with both electrons supplied by one atom.
Formation of permanent dipole-dipole
The electron distribution in a covalent bond between elements with different electronegativities will be unsymmetrical. This produces a polar covalent bond, and may cause a molecule to have a permanent dipole.
Dative bond
Forms when one atom donates both shared electrons in a bond/donates a pair of electrons in a bond
Dipole
Difference in charge between the two atoms caused by a shift in electron density in the bond.
