Bonding Flashcards
What is electronegativity?
The tendency of an atom to attract a pair of electrons
What is ionic bonding?
The transfer of electrons from a metallic element to a non-metallic element to make a noble gas configuration
What’s the strongest intermolecular force?
Ionic bonding
Where to intermolecular force’s happen?
Between the molecules
Where do intramolecular forces happen?
Within the molecule
What type of force is stronger: intermolecular or intramolecular?
Intramolecular
Why can’t diamond conduct electricity?
It has no charges particularly that can move because each carbon atom is bonded with 4 others
Why is graphite used as a lubricant?
The carbon atoms form layers of hexagonal rings that are held together by weak intermolecular forces so they can slide against each other
Why does CBr4 have a higher boiling point than CHBr3?
- CBr4 has van Der waals forces between molecules
- CHBr3 has van der waals and dipole-dipole intermolecular forces
3.The intermolecular forces between CBr4 are stronger than the ones for CHBr3 because it has a larger mass
What are covalent bonds?
A bond that contains a shared pair of electrons
Why are covalent bonds strong?
The shared electrons are attracted to the nucleus of both atoms
What forms ionic bonds?
Metals and non-metals
What forms covalent bonds?
Non-metal and non-metal
Are multiple bonds stronger than single bonds?
Yes
What is a dative bond?
A covalent bond where both electrons come from one atom
