Bonding Flashcards
What are the different things in an atom
Proton, Neutron, Electron
What is the mass of a proton
+1
What is the mass of a Neutron
1
What is the mass of an Electron
-1
What are the 4 matters
Solid, Liquid, Aqueous/Solution,Gas
What are the differences Between the matters
liquid: regular move together, weak forces, low energy, close
Solid: regular arrangement, vibration, fixed, strong forces, lowest energy, very close
Gas: irregular moves, singularly no forces, highest energy far apart
what is ionic bonding?
When a metal and a nonmetal react, causing one atom to give another atom +1 or more electrons causing them to ionically bond
what are the properties of ionic compounds?
High melting points, high boiling points, and strong electrostatic attraction
what is covalent bonding?
When a non-metal and a nonmetal reacts, giving 1+ electrons to an atom, causing ionic, bonding and making one atom positively charged and one negatively charged
What is metallic bonding?
when the metal and metal reacts together causing a metallic bond
hey, what are allotropes?
Different structured forms of the same element
what are the four allotropes of carbon?
Diamond, graphite, graphene, Fullerenes
why is diamond so hard?
Because it forms a very rigid structure
Why are graphite, layers, soft and slippery?
They have weak forces that makes a free to move over each other
what is the difference between them?
They have different structures as diamond has four covalent bonds with other carbon atoms, whereas graphite only has three meaning one electron is delocalised
