Bond Length And Bond Energy Flashcards
1
Q
Bond length
A
Is the average distance between the two nuclei of two atoms in a molecule
2
Q
3 factors that influence bond length
A
- Size of the atom: bond length increases as size increases
- Difference in electronegativity: a greater difference leads to a greater bond and thus a shorter bond length
- Bond order: The higher the number of bonds the smaller the bond length
3
Q
Bond energy
A
Is the amount of energy necessary to break on mol of a specific covalent bond in the gaseous state
4
Q
Relation between bond length and bond energy
A
There is an inverse relation between bond length and bond energy:
- the stronger the bond, the shorter the bond length and the higher the bond energy OR
- the weaker the bond, the longer the bond length and the lower bond energy
5
Q
Factors the influence bond strength
A
- Bond energy: the greater the bond energy, the greater the bond strength
- Bond length: shorter bonds are stronger than longer bonds
- Size of the atoms: bonds between smaller atoms are shorter and therefore stronger
- Bond energy: double bonds and triple bonds are stronger than single bonds. The higher the bond order, the stronger the bond
