Bond Energies Flashcards
What happens to bonds during a chemical reaction?
Bonds are broken and new bonds are made.
How are existing bond broken
Energy must be supplied to break the bonds - so bond breaking is endothermic
How are new bonds made
Energy must be released to make new bonds - so bond formation is exothermic
When is a reactions endothermic
When the energy used to break bonds is greater than the energy to make them
When is a reaction exothermic
When the energy released by forming bonds is greater that the energy used to break them
What is the calculation for overall energy change?
Overall Energy Change = Energy Required to break bonds - Energy released by forming bonds
Positive Energy change = Endothermic
Negative Energy Change = Exothermic
Example of Bond Energy Calculation
