What do we know about Nora?
Nora is Cassie’s mother and the wife of the now dead Sean. She was unhappy in her marriage but loves her son Martin dearly. Her Her relationship with her daughter is at time very tense. She is obsessed with home improvements.

A - As Joe is being arrested, Nora bravely confronts the soldiers taking him even though she is risking her own safety. Cassie describes her as a ‘ lioness ‘ and this highlights just how much she cares about her family
What is the evidence and analysis for the observation; Nora is caring?
E - As Cassie complains about Deirdre taking a shower, Nora says: ‘ That child needs help from someone ‘
A - Although Deirdre is acting in a way which does not invite sympathy, Nora is able to see that she is a troubled young woman
E - She spends a lot of money on fruit for her imprisoned son and son in law

E - In Nora’s house the men are always served their food first is shown by Cassie’s dialogue comment to her mother when they are in the club ‘ Do you know you never put a plate of food in front of me before he had his. ‘
E - ‘ You’ve a job to do bringing up that family and making a decent home for you and your man, so get on with it.’
E - Cassie’s monologue in scene 2 about how the girls do the house work and get the girls to clean up after the boys - ‘ spoil the wee girls with housework and reproaches,’ and ‘ “clear that mess up for me Cassie” ‘
A - Here, Nora shows that she thinks that the job of the women/girls is to make life easier and more comfortable for the boys/men in their lives by cleaning up after them and always making sure they get their dinner first. Sheis unable to sympathise with Cassie’s complaints as she does not feel that women should put themselves ahead of others.
Relationship with her daughtyer
you bring shame on this family
What is the evidence and analysis for the observation; Nora does not have a great relationship with her daughter?
E - When they are in the pub and Nora an Cassie are arguing about Cassie’s dress, Nora says “ You’re bringing shame on this family, Cassie “
E - “ I fell out with my mum on the delivery room floor “
A - This shows that the pair are both in agreement that they do not get on by how Cassie thinks that they fell out for as long as she can remember. The fact that her own mother is eve saying that she is shaming the family shows that clearly there is tension between the two
E - When they are talking about the bet Cassie ignores her mother “ Nora relates the story to Cassie who doesn’t display much interest “
E - When asked by her mother about the washing machine Cassie ignores her and continues to blank her mother out.
A - This shows that Cassie repeatedly does not listen to her mother as the obviously don’t get on and this is to try and annoy her.
