Boiler Components Flashcards
Purpose of the tank shut off valve?
To stop the flow of oil to the to clean the strainer and perform other maintenance
Where is fuel oil stored?
Oil storage tank
the purpose of the oil strainer is to?
separate dirt and sediment come from the fuel oil coming from the storage tank.
The vacuum gauge readings indicate to the operator ?
Whether there is an obstruction in the suction line such as a dirty strainer that requires cleaning
What’s the purpose of the oil pre-heater?
To raise the temperature of the oil for easier pumping and atomization.
What’s the purpose of the atomizing (spinner) cup?
It breaks up (atomizes) the oil for proper combustion.
What is the purpose of the vaporstat?
The vaporstat is a low pressure; pressure control mounted on the fan housing that will shut down the boiler if if the no air for combustion exist.
What is the purpose of the photoelectric cell?
The photoelectric cell is a flame detection device that will shut off the oil burner if a flame is not visible to the scanner or photoelectric cell.
What is the purpose of the aquastat ?
The aquastat operates the boiler in the summer for domestic hot water needs.
What’s the purpose of the low water cut off?
The low water cut off is an automatic electric control that will shut down the burner if the water level is below a safe operating point.
What’s the purpose of the gauge glass?
The gauge glass is the most important control on a steam burner. It indicates the water level of a steam boiler. The gauge glass should have water visible when the boiler is in operation
What is the purpose of the stack switch/primary controller?
The stack switch is the main combustion control. The stack switch will stop the oil burner and lock it out on safety if in case of ignition failure or loss of flame in the combustion chamber. The stack switch operates when there is no heat in the smoke stack.
What’s the purpose of the smoke alarm?
The boiler smoke alarm is mounted on the smoke stack will shut down the burner and put out an alarm if there is excessive smoke or if the fire is improper.
What’s the purpose of the boiler steam pressure gauge and where is it located?
The boiler steam pressure gauge shows the steam pressure inside the steam boiler. It’s located on or near the top of the steam boiler.
What’s the normal steam pressure for low pressure boilers?
Normal steam pressure for low pressure steam boilers is less than 15 psi.
What is the safety or pop off valves purpose?
The safety or pop off valve relieves excessive steam pressure. It is located on or near the top of the steam boiler.
What is the pressuretrol (Pressure Control)?
an automatic electric control. It is an operating limit control and is a device that will shut down the oil burner when the steam pressure reaches a desired point.
What is the manual reset pressuretrol?
a control that will shut down a steam boiler if the pressure continues to rise above the operating pressure control setting. It will lock out the oil burner on safety in case the operating limit pressuretrol (#18) fails to stop the oil burner. This switch will not close again automatically. It must be rest manually.
