Bohr Model 1913 Vs de Broglie 1924 Flashcards
When was the Bohr Model established?
1913
Why was the Bohr model developed?
To explain the Hydrogen atom spectrum
What did Bohr say about how electrons exist in the H atom?
e-s exist in discrete orbitals and do not spiral in to the nucleus.
What did Bohr say happens when electrons stay within their original orbitals?
If the e- stays in their original orbital, no radiation is given out.
What did Bohr say happens when electrons move up and down between the orbitals?
If e-s move up then energy is taken in.
If e-s move down then energy is given out in the form of radiation (light energy).
How accurate was Bohr’s model to explain the emission spectrum in relation to H atom?
Bohr’s model was very theoretical as he was an early adopter of the idea.
It only fully accounts for H atom.
What assumption does Bohr make about electrons?
Assumes e-s are particles.
Who disproved the particle theory in explaining elctrons (Bohr), when and how?
de Broglie 1924.
Introduced wave-particle duality theory.
e-s can behave as both particles and waves.
What does de Broglie say about all moving objects?
All moving objects can show behaviours of both particles and waves.
wave-particle duality.
What would de Broglie say about very small objects such as photons?
Photons are almost entirely waves.
What would de Broglie say about very large objects such as tennis ball?
Tennis balls are entirely particles.
What would de Broglie say about electrons in terms of the wave-particle duality theory?
Electrons are in the middle in terms of size (photons compared to tennis ball), therefore show both types of behaviour (wave and particle).
What is radiation?
The emission of energy as electromagnetic waves which can be seen as light (UV, visible, IR).
