Body Waves Flashcards
What are 2 types of body waves?
Primary / P - waves
Secondary / S - waves
Are the fastest seismic waves, traveling about 6 to 7km/s.
PRIMARY/P-WAVES
They travel through solids liquids; thus, they can pass through the crust, mantle, outer core, and inner core.
PRIMARY/P-WAVES
Are the so-called push and pull waves.
PRIMARY/P-WAVES
Travel with a slower speed than P-waves at about
3.5 km/s.
SECONDARY/S-WAVES
They can only travel through solids, and they cannot pass through liquids, so they can only penetrate through the crust and the mantle.
SECONDARY/S-WAVES
The rock particles either move in an up-and-down motion or side-to-side motion, perpendicular to the movement of waves.
