BODY TISSUES Flashcards
Epithelial tissue covers body surfaces, lines cavities, and forms glands. It protects, absorbs, filters, and secretes substances.
Epithelial Tissue
Types of Simple Epithelium
- Simple Squamous Epithelium
- Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
- Simple Columnar Epithelium
- Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Flat cells, allowing easy diffusion and filtration. Found in air sacs of lungs and blood vessel linings.
Simple Squamous Epithelium
Cube-shaped cells for secretion and absorption. Found in glands and kidney tubules.
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Tall cells for absorption and secretion, often with microvilli. Found in the digestive tract.
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Appears layered but is a single layer of cells. Often ciliated and found in the respiratory tract.
Pseudostratified Columnar Epithelium
Multiple layers of flat cells for protection. Found in the skin, mouth, and esophagus.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Two or more layers of cube-shaped cells, found in ducts of sweat and salivary glands.
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Stratified Epithelium
- Stratified Squamous Epithelium
- Stratified Columnar Epithelium
-Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Rare, found in the male urethra and some ducts.
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
Specialized epithelium that stretches. Found in the bladder, allowing it to expand and contract.
Transitional Epithelium
Specialized for secretion, forming glands.
Glandular Epithelium
Types of Glandular Epithelium
- Endocrine Glands
- Exocrine Glands
Ductless glands that secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream (e.g., thyroid, adrenal glands).
Endocrine Glands
Secrete substances through ducts (e.g., sweat, salivary, and digestive glands).
Exocrine Glands
supports, connects, and protects tissues and organs. It also stores energy and transports substances.
Connective Tissue
Types of Connective Tissue
Areolar Tissue, Adipose Tissue, Reticular Tissue, Dense Connective Tissue, Cartilage, Bone, Blood, and Lymph
is responsible for movement and force generation by contracting.
Muscle Tissue
Types of Muscle Tissue
Skeletal Muscle, Cardiac Muscle, Smooth Muscle
Voluntary muscle attached to bones, responsible for movements like walking and lifting.
Skeletal Muscle
Involuntary muscle found in the heart, responsible for pumping blood.
Cardiac Muscle
Involuntary muscle found in the walls of internal organs (e.g., stomach, intestines, blood vessels), responsible for automatic movements like digestion and regulating blood flow.
Smooth Muscle
Smooth, glassy cartilage found in joints, the nose, and the trachea. It provides smooth surfaces for movement and supports structures.
Hyaline Cartilage
More flexible than hyaline cartilage, found in the external ear and the epiglottis. It helps maintain shape while allowing flexibility.
Elastic Cartilage
