Body Systems Flashcards
What are the 12 Body systems?
- Cardiovascular (Heart, Veins)
- Respiratory
- Digestive (Stomach, intestines)
- Endocrine (Hormones)
- Nervous (Brain, spinal cord)
- Immune
- Lymphatic
- reproductive
- Muscular
- Integumentary
- Skeletal
- Excretory
What are the 3 layers of the cardiovascular system?
Epicardium (Outer most layer)
Endocardium (Inner most layer)
Myocardium (Middle/most muscular layer)
What does the Myocardium do for the heart?
It allows the heart to act like a pump.
What is pericardium?
Sacs that protect the heart from trauma and infection.
What are the circulation types?
- Pulmonary circulation
- Systemic circulation
What side does pulmonary circulation start on?
Right side of the heart.
What does it mean when the color of a heart diagram is blue?
It lacks oxygen= Deoxygenated blood.
What side does systemic circulation start on?
Left side of the heart.
What does it mean when the color of a heart diagram is red?
It contains oxygenated blood.
Where does systemic circulation begin?
The left atrium.
What is the ONLY vein that carries oxygenated blood?
Pulmonary vein.
Where is myocardium located in the heart?
Left ventricle.
What is the largest artery in the heart?
Aorta.
Where does pulmonary circulation stop at?
The lungs.
How many valves are there in the heart?
4
What is the purpose of a valve?
Allows blood to flow in one direction.
What is the ONLY artery that carries deoxygenated blood?
Pulmonary artery.
Where does gas exchange occur?
The lungs.
What are the largest veins of the heart?
Superior vena cavae and Inferior vena cavae.
Where does the superior vena cavae bring blood from?
The upper portion of the body to the heart.
Where does the inferior vena cava bring blood from?
The lower portion of the body to the heart.
How does blood flow through the heart?
- Inferior vena cava (lower portion of body) and Superior vena cava (upper portion of the body)
- Right atrium
- Tricuspid valve
- Right ventricle
- Pulmonary semi-lunar valve
- Lungs
- Pulmonary veins
- Left atrium
- Bicuspid/Mitral valve
- Left ventricle
- Aortic semi-lunar valve
- Aorta
