Noninfectious diseases:

A

are not caused by pathogens, received from genes, lifestyle, health, or malnutrition (i.e cancer, diabetes). They are not contagious

The second line of defense:

A

Defense. The general response to infection. Includes fever, inflammation and phagocytes (phagocytes are cells that sacrifice themselves as they engulf the antigens within them, and form as pus).

Q

The third line of defense:

A

Attack. Specific response to infection.
Immune cells target specific antigens
T cells identify pathogenic cells and destroy the targeted cells
B cells produce antibodies that adapt to antibodies on antigen
B cells’ antibodies fight off pathogenic cells
B cells remember the infectious cells for the future.

Q

Who created the Vaccine? Why?

A

Edward Jenner, he noticed milkmaids were not harmed by smallpox because their body was used to a similar infection (cowpox), he experimented with cowpox to prevent smallpox.

16
Q

What does the nervous system do

A

Control rapid responses

17
Q

Types of neurons

A

Sensory, Motor, Inter

18
Q

Purpose of sensory neuron

A

carries out nerve impulses from tissues + organs to the brain + spinal cord

19
Q

Purpose of motor neuron

A

carries out nerve impulses from brain + spinal cord to muscles + glands

20
Q

Purpose of interneuron

A

carries out nerve impulses back and forth between sensory + motor neuron

21
Q

Parts of CNS

A

brain and spinal cord

22
Q

Parts of PNS

A

nervous tissue outside of CNS
split up into sensory and motor divs
sensory & motor

23
Q

What is a gland?

A

something which releases hormones into bloodstream and maintains development.

24
Q

Types of glands:

A

Adrenal (adrenaline, blood flow, energy, high bp), thyroid (controls metab and heart rate), and pituitary (puberty for diff genders)

25
Q

Whats homeostasis

A

inner stability

26
Q

What’s a negative feedback loop

A

it detensifies the hormone production and promotes homeostasis.

27
Q

What’s a positive feedback loop

A

it intensifies hormone production and demotes homeostasis. It entails a response which is in the same direction of the planned disturbance of movement.
