Body Systems Flashcards
What are the organ systems?
Integumentary, Skeletal, Lymphatic, Muscular, Nervous, Respiratory, Endocrine, Cardiovascular, Digestive, Urinary, and Reproductive
Integumentary system
External body covering, protects deeper tissues, contains cutaneous receptors, and sweat and oil glands
Skeletal system
Protects and supports organs, provides framework for movement, produces blood cells, stores minerals
Lymphatic system
Returns leaked fluid to blood, disposes of waste, houses lymphocytes involved in immunity
Muscular system
Maintains posture, produces movement, produces heat, creates facial expressions
Nervous system
Fast message facilitation, activates muscles and glands to respond to environmental changes
Respiratory system
Keeps blood supplied with oxygen, removes carbon dioxide, gaseous exchange happens through lungs
Endocrine system
Glands that secrete hormones to regulate growth, reproduction, metabolism, mood etc.
Cardiovascular system
Transports blood through the body to deliver oxygen and nutrients and remove waste, pumped by the heart
Digestive system
Breaks food into absorbable nutrients, eliminates waste
Urinary system
Eliminates waste, balances water, electrolyte, and acid/base balance of blood
Reproductive system
Production of offspring - Testes produce sperm, ovaries produce ova (eggs), uterus houses the fetus, mammary glands provide milk for the newborn
