A

Sends electrical signals around the body, which is managed by nerve tissues in the brain. Electrical impulses allow you to feel and move muscles.

Q

What is mechanical digestion?

A

Where food is torn, sliced and broken down by the teeth, which breaks the food into small pieces.
Mechanical digestion is a physical change which means no new substances are made.

Q

What is chemical digestion?

A

Large, complex substances in the food are broken down into simple chemicals by saliva in your mouth and gastric juices in your stomach, which produces new smaller chemical that the body can absorb. New substances made = chemical change.

Q

What is the role of the mouth in the digestive system?

A

When you chew your salivary glands make saliva, a digestive juice, which monsoons food so it moves easily through your oesophagus into your stomach.

Q

What is the oesophagus and its role in the digestive system?

A

A long muscular tube that stabs at your mouth and ends at your stomach. Peristalsis is the muscle of your oesophagus expanding and contracting to push the food towards your stomach.

Q

What is the role of the stomach in the digestive system?

A

The stomach mainly digest carbohydrates, it holds the food and mixes it with acid and enzyme that continues to break the food down into a liquid paste, making it easier to digest.

Q

What is the role of the small intestine in the digestive system?

A

Food is broken down into liquid and most nutrients are absorbed, the waste is then passed onto the large intestine.

Q

What is the role of the duodenum in the digestive system?

A

Mixes the food with enzyme and bile to digest, and helps break Dian nutrients from food to make them available for absorption in the bloodstream.

21
Q

What is the role of the ileum in the digestive system?

A

Absorbing any finale nutrients such as vitamin B12 and bile acids.

22
Q

What is the role of the pancreas in the digestive system?

A

Not part of the digestive tract but it’s organ connects to it. It produces pancreatic juices which to digest fats, proteins and carbohydrates.

23
Q

What is the liver and its role in the digestive system?

A

It is the body’s largest internal organ and we cannot survive without it. Performs over 500 chemical processes. Blood carries nutrients from the digestive tract to the liver, before going anywhere else. While the blood passes through the liver it removes toxins such as alcohol.

24
Q

What are gastric juices made of?

A

Mucus, enzyme and acids.

25
Q

What is the role of the large intestine in the digestive system?

A

Water is reabsorbed into the body from what is left from the coke, as well as any remaining nutrients. Removes water from undigested food. The waste of food forms lumps of faeces known as stools. Stool is then expelled from the body through the anus.

26
Q

What is the appendix?

A

A small, finger-liked organ that comes out of the first sort of the large intestine.

27
Q

What is the role of the anus (recital cavity) in the digestive system?

A

Acts as a temporary storage site for waste.

28
Q

What do our cells in on the respiratory system?

A

Celsius need energy to function and they get their oxygen from respiration. A series of chemical changes on a cell that releases energy, which requires glucose and oxygen.

29
Q

Chemical equation for respiration

A

Oxygen + glucose = carbon dioxide + water + energy

30
Q

What is the trachea, bronchus and bronchioles?

A

The trachea is a thick garden hose like structure with walls made of cartilage rings. The trachea divides into two bronchi, each bronchus then further divides into smaller tubes called bronchioles. Bronchioles end in the lungs in a cluster of sacs known as alveoli.

31
Q

What is the cilia and its role?

A

The cilia waves back and forth 14-15x per second and pushes mucus to the back of the nose into the pharynx . The pharynx connects the mouth and nose to the oesophagus where mucus is then swallowed.

32
Q

What is the Alveoli and its function?

A

The alveoli is microscopic in size and about 600 million makes up your lungs, it provides a large surface area for gas exchange.

33
Q

What are the steps for gas exchange.

A
  1. Oxygen dissolved into moist alveoli surface and moves into the blood through a process called diffusion.
  2. Cells use oxygen to release energy from glucose,
  3. As energy is produces carbon dioxide is produced
4, carbon dioxide will then go from cell to blood then into the alveoli.
5, carbon dioxide then leaves the body next time you exhale.
34
Q

What is the function of the circulatory system

A

Carries nutrients and oxygen to cells from respiration. It removes carbon dioxide from cells. It takes two lungs to be exhaled. Transport other waste products to where they can be disposed of,
Distributes heat around the body since it is the byproduct of respiration.

35
Q

What is arteries and its function?

A

The arteries carry blood away from the heart, when the heart beats it pumps blood through the arteries under pressure. Walls are tough and elastic, so it can bounce back into shape after each beat.

36
Q

What happens if an artery was cut?

A

High pressure in the artery causes blood to squirt out quickly.

37
Q

What are veins and its function?

A

Veins carry blood back to the heart. Heartbeat lost in the narrow capillaries before blood flows into veins. Veins do not have or need thick muscular walls. Muscles contract and squeeze the veins pushing blood towards the heart.

38
Q

What are Capillaries and its function ?

A

Arteries branch of into smaller and smaller vessels, eventually so small and fine that they reach nearly every cell of the body. Capillary walls are only one cell thick, this allows dissolved materials to pass through them. Materials needed by cells pass out of the capillaries and into the cells. In reverse, waste materials from the cell pass into the capillary.

39
Q

What is the heart?

A

The heart is about the size of your fist, which is located in the middle of your chest. The heart is made up of a special type of muscle called cardiac muscle.

40
Q

What is the function of cardiac muscle?

A

Cardiac muscles never get tired and continuously responds to the heart’s pacemaker.

41
Q

What does one half of the heart do?

A

It collects oxygenated blood from the lungs and pumps it around body.

42
Q

What does the other half of the heart collect?

A

The other half of the heart collects deoxygenated blood and pumps it to the lungs.

43
Q

What is blood?

A

Blood is the only organ in the body that exists as a liquid.

44
Q

What does blood consists of?

A

Red blood cells:
Which is made in bone marrow of long bones such as femur (thigh bone) and ribs , red blood cells contain haemoglobin which gives red blood cells its colour.

White blood cells:
White blood cells are apart of the immune system that helps fight diseases

45
Q

What are platelets and its role?

A

Broken up bits of cells produced in bone marrow, it helps blood to clot.

46
Q

What happens of there were no platelets?

A

No platelets mean that you would bleed excessively

47
Q

What happens if there were to many platelet?

A

To many blood vessels lead to a clot in the blood vessel, causing:
Heart attack - if clot is in the heart
Stroke- if clot is in the brain

48
Q

What is plasma?

A

A clear yellowish liquid that is 90% water. The remaining 10% is dissolved materials such as nutrients and waste.

49
Q

What is the function of the excretory system?

A

To remove waste from the body.

50
Q

What is the job of the liver in the excretory system?

A

Breaks down amino acids, removes poisonous toxins/ substances and breaks down old red blood cells.
