Body System Flashcards
What is the definition of the body system?
Arrangements of two or more organs that work together to perform a specific job.
What is Epithelial Tissue?
Cells that form surfaces over other organs, it lines the inside of the mouth and the digestive system.
What is muscle tissue?
Tissue that can contract ( become smaller or fatter / be shortened). Muscle tissue assists in movement.
What is Connective tissue?
Supports and holds together other tissues in the body. Examples of connective tissues are bones, cartilage, ligaments and tendons.
What is nerve tissue?
Sends electrical signals around the body, which is managed by nerve tissues in the brain. Electrical impulses allow you to feel and move muscles.
How do cells become organs?
Cells, tissues, organs, organ system
Respiratory defintion
The system that takes air into your body, to make oxygen available for cells.
Skeletal system defintion
It gives the body shape, allows movement and makes blood cells.
Excretory system defintion
Gets rid if any waste products inside the body.
Nervous system defintion
Helps different parts of the body’s communicate with each other.
Reproductive system defintion
Helps produce, sustain and transport eggs and sperm cells.
Digestive system defintion
Breaks down food we eat into its simplest form to digest.
What is the function of the digestive system?
Provides the body with all its building materials with energy that we need for everyday activities.
What is mechanical digestion?
Where food is torn, sliced and broken down by the teeth, which breaks the food into small pieces.
Mechanical digestion is a physical change which means no new substances are made.
What is chemical digestion?
Large, complex substances in the food are broken down into simple chemicals by saliva in your mouth and gastric juices in your stomach, which produces new smaller chemical that the body can absorb. New substances made = chemical change.
What is the role of the mouth in the digestive system?
When you chew your salivary glands make saliva, a digestive juice, which monsoons food so it moves easily through your oesophagus into your stomach.
What is the oesophagus and its role in the digestive system?
A long muscular tube that stabs at your mouth and ends at your stomach. Peristalsis is the muscle of your oesophagus expanding and contracting to push the food towards your stomach.
What is the role of the stomach in the digestive system?
The stomach mainly digest carbohydrates, it holds the food and mixes it with acid and enzyme that continues to break the food down into a liquid paste, making it easier to digest.
What is the role of the small intestine in the digestive system?
Food is broken down into liquid and most nutrients are absorbed, the waste is then passed onto the large intestine.
What is the role of the duodenum in the digestive system?
Mixes the food with enzyme and bile to digest, and helps break Dian nutrients from food to make them available for absorption in the bloodstream.
