Body skills Flashcards
What is body awareness in dance?
learning to feel - as you perfom
Body awareness involves learning to feel each movement in your body as you perform it.
How does dancing with awareness affect performance?
vitality, aids projection
Dancing with awareness gives your movement a vitality that aids projection during performance.
What is body articulation?
Ability to isolate
Body articulation is the ability of the dancer to isolate and combine individual body parts to communicate a desired intent.
What is falls
Release, giving in
A complete release of the muscles as the body gives in to gravity.
What is a collapse fall?
relaxed, successive giving in over COG
A collapse fall is a relaxed, successive giving-in which happens over the centre of gravity and tends not to recover.
What is an off-centre fall?
COG shifts - Falling unavoidable
An off-centre fall occurs when the centre of gravity shifts off-centre, making falling unavoidable.
What is alignment (syllabus)
relationship - LOG and BOS
Alignment is the relationship of the skeleton to the line of gravity and the base of support.
What is alignment (definition)
each segment stacked
Alignment is the placement of each segment of your body stacked correctly on top of each other.
Why is good alignment important?
Move efficiently
Good alignment improves dancing by helping your body to move efficiently, therefore increasing your dancing and performing life.
What is the centre of gravity (COG)?
Centre of weight
The centre of gravity is the centre of weight distribution in the body.
What is the line of gravity (LOG)?
Imaginary line ( COG to BOS )
The line of gravity is an imaginary line that runs through the centre of gravity to the base of support.
What defines the base of support (BOS)?
Far apart = stable Close = less stable
Base of support is defined as how the person is standing.
If their feet are wide apart they have a large BOS which means they have better stability
If their feet are close together they have a small BOS which means they are less stable
What is locomotor movement?
That travels
Locomotor movement is movement that travels from place to place, usually identified by weight transference on the feet.
What is axial movement?
Anchored to one spot
Axial movement is any movement that is anchored to one spot by a body part using only the kinesphere without losing the initial contact.
What are turns in dance?
Rotation around central axis
Turns are a rotation around the body’s central axis and require control and balance.
What is balance in dance?
Even distribution, maintain equilibruim
Balance is an even distribution of weight in a stationary position where alignment allows the dancer to maintain equilibrium.
What is elevation in dance?
Jump, remain suspended
Elevation is the ability to jump up into the air and give the appearance of remaining suspended at the apex of the jump.
What is kinaesthetic awareness?
In motion or stillness
Kinaesthetic awareness is the perception of the body’s muscles, joints and tendons while in motion or stillness.
How does kinaesthetic awareness improve dance technique?
Control movements
By becoming aware of their own kinaesthetic sensations, students can more accurately direct and control their movements.
