Upstaging causes one of three things
A
- causes the actor downstage to move upstage which moves both actors further away from the audience
- causes the actor to talk where the other actor is supposed to be instead of talking upstage, so it looks strange
- causes the actor downstage to turn their back to the audience and talk up to the other actor so the audience won’t be able to see and hear the downstage actor very well
