sagittal plane
vertical line that divides the body into right and left sides
midsagittal plane
passes right through the midline of the body dividing it in equal sides
parasagittal plane
does not pass through the midline but divides the body into unequal parts.
frontal plane
divides the body into anterior and posterior portions
transverse plane
divides the body into superior and inferior portions
dorsal cavity
containing the skull, brain and the vertebral canal containing the spinal cord and beginning roots of spinal nerves
thoracic cavity
contains two pleural cavities and a pericardial cavity. the pleural cavities hold the lungs
ventral cavity
located in the front of the body. It is subdivided into thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavity
the mediastinum
the esophagus, trachea, thymus gland and large blood and lymphatic vessels can be found in it
pericardial cavity
it is a fluid filled space with serous membrane that supports and protects the heart
abnominalpelvic cavity
it is divided into two sections; abdominal and pelvic
abdominal cabity
contains the stomach, spleen, liver, pancreas, small intestine and most of the large intestine
pelvic cavity
contains the urinary bladder, portions of large intestine, and internal organs of reproduction.
