Body Planes Flashcards
Sagittal Plane
Divides the entire body or a body part into right and left segments. The plane passes vertical through the body from front to back.
Coronal Plane
Divides the entire body/body parts into anterior and posterior segments.
Horizontal Plane
Pases corsswise throughout the body or a body part at right angles to the longitudinal axis.
Right angle to the sagittal and coronal planes.
Divides the body or body parts into superior and inferior portions.
Oblique Plane
Can pass through a body part at any angle among the three other planes.
Uses of Planes
- Center a body part to the IR
- Center ray and to ensure the body is properly oriented and aligned with the IR
- Guide projections of the central ray
Interiliac Plane
Transects the pelvis at the top of the iliac crests at the level of the forth lumbar spinous process
Used in positioning the lumbar, spine, sacrum, and coccyx
Occlusal Plane
Formed by the biting surfaces of the upper and lower teeth with the jaws closed
Used in positioning of the odontoid process and some head projections
Midsagittal Plane
Divides the body into equal right and left parts
Midcoronal Plane
Divides the body into equal anterior and posterior parts
