Are imaginary lines, drawn through an upright body that is in anatomical position

These are often used interchangeably, but they actually have different meanings
Body Planes and Sections
Are the portions or slices of the body created by the cut through the plane
It allows us to look at different views of the body depending on the direction of the cut

Saggital Plane
Coronal Plane
Transverse Plane
An up and down plane that is a right angle to the horizon
Vertical plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into unequal left and right portions
Sagittal plane
Also known as the midline or median, is the sagittal plane that divides the body into equal left and right halves
Midsagittal plane
A vertical plane that divides the body into anterior (front) and posterior (back) portions.
Frontal plane/Coronal plane
Is a flat crosswise plane, such as the horizon
The Horizontal Planes
A horizontal plane that divides the body into superior (upper) and inferior (lower) portions.
Transverse plane/axial plane
A plane inclined from the horizon
Oblique plane (a special plane)
A plane that transects the pelvis at the top of the iliac crests at the level of the fourth lumbar spinous process
Interiliac plane (A special plane)
Is an imaginary plane formed by the occlusal surfaces of the teeth when the jaw is close
