Body, Mind, Spirit Flashcards
Describe some characteristics of the Physiologic Basis for the Mind Body connection
Conscious mind can affect pain perception: medial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex
Signals in the brain are amplified by emotions/activation of the sympathetic system
Muscle spasm, peripheral vasoconstriction, aggravation of physical symptoms in the body, elevated levels of adrenergic NTs (EPI and NorEPI), elevated cortisol levels
Endocannabinoid system effects on
Spinal cord, hippocampus, basal ganglia, amygdala, cerebellum and cerebral cortex
Autonomic function, HPA acts activity, CTs, pain, cognition and mood.
Amygdala, Thalamus and other structure affect both pain and emotion
Name some benefits of OMT
Reducing nociceptive input and decrease facilitation
Balancing dysfunctional aspects of the nervous system
Affects on serum endocannabinoid levels
Improving structure and function
affects on mental state - reduced anxiety
Describe Somato-emotional release
The idea that pain and emotion are connected and using OMT to release patterns of injury in the myofascial tissue can improve structure and function as well as affecting the psyche
16 yo F high school student with Back Pain and thoracolumbar back pain after joining school’s flag team. Little somatic dysfunction. Whats wrong, what happened?
The girl was so anxious about the sport and being on the team that her emotional pain was manifesting as physical symptoms.
No long term response to OMT
Quit the team and felt better in a few days
35 yo F with Neck pain over 3 years. No single traumatic event, Lots of SD: cervical, thoracic, rib, sub occipital. What happened?
Emotional tension causes physical tension.
Responded to OMT, HEP, and emotional support and assurance
Describe the effects of writing about stressful experiences study
Patients with Asthma or RA
Either assigned to write about the most stressful event of their lives or a neutral topic
Both groups had significant (P=0.001) improvement and reduction in disease severity while controls showed no change
What happened when college students wrote about their testing worries?
Boosted exam scores
College students taking tests in stressful circumstances. Wrote down their thoughts about the upcoming exam immediately before.
Exam scores improved significantly in all trials, greater for students with higher baseline anxiety
Issues with Medical Decision Making
Spiritual beliefs and priorities affect patient’s decision making.
All depends on the factors at hand and what will be best for the patient
