Describe some characteristics of the Physiologic Basis for the Mind Body connection

A

Conscious mind can affect pain perception: medial and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex

Signals in the brain are amplified by emotions/activation of the sympathetic system
Muscle spasm, peripheral vasoconstriction, aggravation of physical symptoms in the body, elevated levels of adrenergic NTs (EPI and NorEPI), elevated cortisol levels

Endocannabinoid system effects on
Spinal cord, hippocampus, basal ganglia, amygdala, cerebellum and cerebral cortex
Autonomic function, HPA acts activity, CTs, pain, cognition and mood.

Amygdala, Thalamus and other structure affect both pain and emotion

A

The girl was so anxious about the sport and being on the team that her emotional pain was manifesting as physical symptoms.

No long term response to OMT

Quit the team and felt better in a few days

A

Patients with Asthma or RA
Either assigned to write about the most stressful event of their lives or a neutral topic

Both groups had significant (P=0.001) improvement and reduction in disease severity while controls showed no change

A

Boosted exam scores

College students taking tests in stressful circumstances. Wrote down their thoughts about the upcoming exam immediately before.

Exam scores improved significantly in all trials, greater for students with higher baseline anxiety

Found that creating was extremely elevated = approaching end stage renal failure.

Repeated lab test and consulted nephrologist. Sister was a match and gave a successful kidney transplant. Went on to become a mom

4 mo baby with heart murmur

A

Was being seen since 4 weeks old

baby was small, not gaining wight but otherwise healthy
Mom was nursing and supplementing

Heard new heart murmur at 4 month visit - had to tell them to go the children’s hospital

Baby had a VSD. Mom wanted to wait on surgery but Dr. fuller insisted

Excellent outcome and the baby incision was treated with OMM after initial healing period
