Body Fluids Flashcards

1
Q

These factors contribute to?

  1. Excessive consumption of body fluid due to high fever, profuse sweating, excessive vomiting, excessive diarrhea, and profuse urine
  2. Consumption of fluid by dryness and heat
  3. Insufficiency of body fluid due to scanty drinking of water and decline of organ qi

Q

These are the etiology factors causing?

  1. Long heat due to deficiency of yin evaporates body fluid, congeals it into phlegm
  2. Emotional stress may produce heat which burns body fluid
  3. Invasion by cold dampness or too much greasy food results in dysfunction of spleen and stomach
  4. Deficiency of kidney qi fails to govern body fluid, the fluid spreads over
  5. Phlegm is produced by six pathogenic factors (six exterior evils) which cause spleen and lung confusion and result in indigestion

Q

Phlegm can be divided in to 5 categories what are they?

A
  1. Heat Phlegm “Yellow sticky”
  2. Cold Phlegm “White, clear, thin”
  3. Damp Phlegm “White, slippery, profuse in quantity”
  4. Dry Phlegm “Less in quantity, sticky, hard to expectorate”
  5. Wind Phlegm “Clear, thin with a lot of bubbles”

Fluid retention is identified by where it is located. What are they?

A
  1. Phlegm fluid-retention (in a narrow sense); “Stomach and Intestines”
  2. Suspended fluid-retention; “Hypochondrium”
  3. Sustained fluid-retention; “Above Diaphragm”

Memorize

Phlegm fluid-retention (in a narrow sense) is marked by epigastric and abdominal fullness and distention as well as borborygmus;

Suspended fluid-retention is marked by thoracic and hypochondriac fullness, distending pain, aggravation of pain after spitting, coughing, or rotating the body;

Sustained fluid-retention is marked by cough and asthma, profuse and thin sputum, chest oppression and palpitation;

Extravasating fluid-retention is marked by swollen limbs and dysuria.
