Body fluid compartments Flashcards
The body fluids are found in two compartments
The extracellular fluids and intracellular fluid. They are in osmotic equilibrium but have very different chemical compositions
The body compartments are in a state of dynamic
disequilibrium. The cell membrane is a selectively permeable barrier between the ECF and ICF
List the two categories of membrane proteins and where they’re found
Integral proteins- found within the membrane. ex. Transmembranes
Peripheral proteins- Bound to inner or outer surface of the membrane
Membrane proteins (6)
Receptor proteins
carrier proteins
channels,
anchoring porteins
recognition proteins (identifiers)
Enzymes
Bind and respond to ligands (ions, hormones)
receptor proteins
Transport specific solutes through membrane
carrier proteins
Regulate water flow and solutes through membrane
channels
Attach to inside or outside structures
anchoring proteins (stabilizers)
Label cells as normal or abnormal
Recognition proteins (identifiers)
Catalyze reactions
enzymes
2/3 of the total body water volume
Intracellular fluid
Is 1/3 of the total body water volume.
ECF
The ECF divides into 2 parts
Interstitial fluid and plasma membrane
The liquid matrix of blood
Blood plasma
Lies between the circulatory system and the cells
Interstitial fluid
