Medical Terms
Frontal or Coronal Plane
Any vertical planes passing thru the body from the head to the feet that divides the body into front ( anterior ) and back posterior.
Midsagittal or Median Plane
A vertical plane through the middle of the body that divides the body into equal right and left halves.
Transverse Plane
A horizontal field dividing the body into upper ( top) and lower ( bottom ) portions.
Anterior
Pertaining to the front of the body or towards the belly of the body.
Caudal
Pertaining to the tail.
Cranial
Pertaining to the head.
Distal
Away from or farthest the trunk of the body or farthest from the point of origin of a body part.
Dorsal
Pertaining to the back or posterior.
Dorsum/Posterior
Back
Inferior
Below or downward towards the tail or feet.
Lateral
Towards the side of the body , away from the midline of the body.
Medial
Towards the midline of the body.
Plantar
Pertaining to the sole of the foot.
Posterior
Pertaining to the back of the body.
Pronate
Turning palms of the hands downward , or turning the foot so that the inner sole bears the weight.
