Body Cavities & Membranes Flashcards
What do body cavities do?
They house internal organs and are grouped into two aspects.
What are the 2 aspects that body cavities are grouped into?
Posterior aspect and Ventral Cavity
The posterior aspect is completely encased in the what?
The bone
What is the posterior aspect subdivided into?
Cranial cavity (Endocranium) & the Vertebral Canal
What does the Cranial cavity (Endocranium) house?
The brain
What does the Vertebral canal house?
The spinal cord
Where is the ventral cavity located?
In the front of the body
What is the ventral cavity subdivided into?
Thoracic Cavity (Superior) & Abdominopelvic Cavity (Inferior)
The subdivisions of the ventral cavity are lined with what?
Serous Membranes
What are the 2 layers of the serous membranes?
Parietal Layer & Visceral Layer
What does the Parietal Layer line?
It lines the internal surface of the body wall.
What does the Visceral Layer cover?
It covers the external surface of the organs (viscera).
What is the serous cavity?
The space between the two membranes.
What is the serous liquid?
Liquid secreted by serous membrane cells, acts as a lubricant and reduces friction from organ movement.
What does the Thoracic Cavity inclose?
The Mediastinum, Pericardium, & Pleura
