Body Cavities
Internally the body is divided into a few large spaces/cavities which contain organs called Dorsal Cavity and Ventral Cavity.
dorsal cavity
this body cavity has two subdivisions: cranial cavity and spinal cavity (canal)
cranial cavity
containing the brain
spinal cavity
enclosing the spinal cord
ventral cavity
this body cavity has two main subdivisions which is separated by the diaphragm: thoracic cavity and mediastinum
thoracic cavity
is superior to the diaphragm
mediastinum
is the space etween the lungs, including the organs and vessels contained in that space
abdominopelvic cavity
is inferior to the diaphragm, and is further subdivided into two regions: abdominal cavity and pelvic cavity
abdominal cavity
superior portion of the abdominalpelvic cavity; contains the stomach, most of the intestine, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen
pelvic cavity
inferior portion of the abdominalpelvic cavity starting from the top of the hip bones; contains urinary bladder, rectum, internal parts of the reproductive system.
