Body Cavities Flashcards
This body cavity can be subdivided into the cranial cavity and the vertebral (or spinal) cavity
Dorsal Body Cavity
This body cavity is subdivided into the thoracic cavity, the abdominopelvic cavity, abdominal cavity, and pelvic cavity.
Ventral Body Cavity
The brain is enclosed within the rigid skull
Cranial Cavity
The delicate spinal cord is protected by the bony vertebral column
Vertebral Cavity
The heart and lungs which are afforded some measure of protection by the bony rib cage.
Thoracic Cavity
Is superior to the abdominal cavity and contains the pelvic cavity and the abdominal cavity.
Abdominopelvic Cavity
This area houses the stomach, intestines, liver, and other organs (digestive viscera)
Abdominal Cavity
The region that is partially enclosed by the bony pelvis and contains the reproductive organs, bladder, and rectum.
Pelvic Cavity
The walls and outer surfaces of he organs are covered with an exceedingly thin, double layered membrane.
Serosa or Serous Membrane (Of the Ventral Body Cavity)
This part lines the cavity walls
Parietal Serosa
Covering the external surface of the organs within the cavity
Visceral Serosa
The serosa lining the abdominal cavity and covering its organs
Peritoneum
Enclosing the lungs
Pleura
That around the heart
Pericardium
