Body Cavities Flashcards
Dorsal body cavities
Contains the cranial body cavity and the vertebral cavity
Ventral body cavities
Contains the thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity
Cranial cavity
Encloses the brain in a rigid skull, part of the dorsal cavity
Vertebral cavity
Encloses the spinal cord, part of the dorsal cavity
Thoracic cavity
Encloses the heart and lungs, part of the ventral cavity, superior to the abdominopelvic cavity
Abdominopelvic cavity
Encloses the abdominal and pelvic cavities, inferior to the thoracic cavity
Abdominal cavity
Encloses the stomach, intestines, liver, and other organs
Pelvic cavity
Encloses the reproductive organs, bladder, and rectum
Diaphragm
Separates the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities
Serous membranes
The walls of the ventral cavity and the outer surfaces have a thin, double-layered membrane called the serous membrane
Parietal serosa
Refers to the outer membrane which lines the cavity walls
Visceral serosa
Refers to the inner membrane which covers the external surfaces of the organs
Peritoneum
Refers to the serous membrane which lines the abdominal cavity
Pleura
Refers to the serous membrane which covers the lungs, the lungs are located in the pleural cavity
Pericardium
Refers to the serous membrane which covers the heart, the heart is located in the pericardial cavity
