Body Cavities Flashcards
Dorsal body cavities
Contains the cranial body cavity and the vertebral cavity
Ventral body cavities
Contains the thoracic cavity and the abdominopelvic cavity
Cranial cavity
Encloses the brain in a rigid skull, part of the dorsal cavity
Vertebral cavity
Encloses the spinal cord, part of the dorsal cavity
Thoracic cavity
Encloses the heart and lungs, part of the ventral cavity, superior to the abdominopelvic cavity
Abdominopelvic cavity
Encloses the abdominal and pelvic cavities, inferior to the thoracic cavity
Abdominal cavity
Encloses the stomach, intestines, liver, and other organs
Pelvic cavity
Encloses the reproductive organs, bladder, and rectum
Diaphragm
Separates the thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities
Serous membranes
The walls of the ventral cavity and the outer surfaces have a thin, double-layered membrane called the serous membrane
Parietal serosa
Refers to the outer membrane which lines the cavity walls
Visceral serosa
Refers to the inner membrane which covers the external surfaces of the organs
Peritoneum
Refers to the serous membrane which lines the abdominal cavity
Pleura
Refers to the serous membrane which covers the lungs, the lungs are located in the pleural cavity
Pericardium
Refers to the serous membrane which covers the heart, the heart is located in the pericardial cavity
Mediastinum
Refers to the medial cavity in the thoracic cavity
Pleural cavities
Refers to the cavities in the thoracic cavity which enclose the lungs, they are separated by the mediastinum
Right/left hypochondriac region
Refers to the lateral regions to the epigastric region. It overlies part of the ribs
Epigastric region
Refers to the upper middle region of the abdominopelvic cavity. It lies right below the sternum and overlies the stomach, and part of the liver
Right/Left lumbar region
Refers to the regions lateral to the umbilical region. It contains part of the large intestine in the right lumbar region, and the part of the small intestine in the left
Umbilical region
Refers to the region in the middle of your stomach, it contains your navel and overlies a majority of the small intestines
Right/Left Iliac region (inguinal regions)
Refers to the region on the lateral sides of the hypogastric region. The right side contains the cecum (the starting pouch of the large intestine)
Hypogastric (pubic) region
Refers to the bottom middle region of your abdominopelvic region. It contains the small intestines and the urinary bladder. It also contains your appendix
Orbital cavity
Refers to the bony eye socket, it contains the eye
Oral cavity
Refers to the mouth, it contains the tongue and teeth
Middle ear cavity
Refers to the cavity in the middle ear, it contains the small bones of the ear
Nasal cavity
Refers to the cavity of the nose, it contains mucus and the passage to the respiratory system
Synovial cavities
Refers to the joint cavities, they contain membranes that line the synovial cavities which secrete a lubricating fluid to reduce friction
