body at war questions Flashcards
3 ways disease causing microbes can spread
touching, coughs, sneezes
3 microbes that cause disease
viruses, bacteria, fungi
why are viruses classified as non-living
viruses are not made up of cells, which are therefore unstable and are unable to grow
how does bacteria reproduce
binary fission
what conditions do bacteria reproduce
warm, moist, protein-rich environments, slightly acidic areas
how do resistant bacteria (super bugs) develop
when antibiotics and anti fungals are present
how do viruses reproduce
by infecting a host cell
how does fungi reproduce
they produce asexually by fragmentation buddying or producing spores
difference between antiseptic and disinfectant
disinfectant kills germs on non-living surfaces, antiseptic kills microorganisms on skin
how can bacterial infections spread
contact, droplet, airborne
4 parts of first line defense
skin, tears, mucus, cilia
2 physical and 2 chemical barriers to disease (1st line defense)
physical: tears, skin
chemical: stomach acid, neutrophils (bacteria, white blood cells)
why does swelling and redness occur after infection
cells begin inflammatory response trapping bacteria and other offending agents, or start healing injured tissue
why is it good for scabs to form over cuts
it protects cut by keeping germs out, giving skin cells underneath a chance to heal
