body Flashcards
what is digestion?
where large insoluble molecules are broken down smaller soluble ones that can be absorbed into the bloodstream
what are the different digestive enzymes and what do they do?
amylase - released salivary glands and pancreas - breakdown carbohydrates into simple sugars.
protease - released in stomach and pancreas - breakdown proteins into amino acids.
lipase- released in pancreas - breakdown fats and oils into fatty acids and glycerol
what is the lock and key theory?
a modal to explain enzyme action enzymes proteins biological catalysts- increase chemical reactions without being used up
what does the heart do?
pumps low oxygen/ high carbon dioxide blood to the lungs
what do the two ventricles do?
the right ventricle pumps blood to the lungs where gas is exchanged takes place
the left ventricle pumps blood around the rest of the body.
what is the resting heart rate controlled by?
it is controlled by a group of cells in right atrium.
what are the features if the heart and are they oxygenated or de-oxygenated?
vena cava - de-oxy right atrium- de-oxy right ventricle - de-oxy left ventricle - oxy left atrium - oxy aorta- oxy
what do lungs do?
in the lungs oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged in alveoli at the end of the bronchial tubes . the alveoli are surrounded by capillaries
