They must fit properly - be the proper size (chest and weight) for the intended wearer and in good and serviceable condition
What’s on a capacity plate?
The maximum weight, horspower and people the boat can hold
How would you determine where hazards are?
Hazard buoys - nautical charts
How old must you be to operate a motorboat?
At least 12, but 12-13 must have supervision of someone 21 or older. 14 and up don’t need it.
Which PFD will turn most unconscious persons face up?
A type 1 PFD - aka offshore life jacket
Who is responsible for basic safety of the vessel?
The vessel operator (you)
Where should a fire extinguisher be stored?
in an easily and readily accessible area
What should you do with a torn life jacket?
Discard and replace it
How does alcohol affect a boater?
The affect of alcohol is increased when boaating. It causes dehydration, depresses the central nervous system, affects judgment, slows physical reaction time, makes it difficult to multitask, and reduces ability to distinguish colors.
**Impairs and slowsreaction time, judgement, balance, vision
What special equipment do you need if operating in federal waters?
Visual distress signals
What sound producing device should be on board?
Horns and whistles
What are the signs that dangerous weather is near?
Accumulating dark clouds, shifting winds, graying skies, and distant sounds of thunder. A falling barometer, wind direction shifts, lightning, rough water, fog, etc.
****Changing wind and darkening clouds
What is part of regular engine checks?
Oil change
How should you approach a dock?
Reduce your speed going with the current/wind
What should you do before fueling up the boat?
turn the motor/engine off and anything that might cause a spark
Where do you get your boat ready before launching?
well away from the launch area - at home
How can propeller strikes be avoided?
turn off the boat (propellor) and don’t swim at the back of the boat
What are some careless operations?
Not wearing a life jacket
What is the best way to avoid drowning?
Wearing a life jacket
What should you do about zebra mussels?
Remove them - they can damage the boat
What should the vessel operator tell everyone on board?
basic laws and safety precautions
Explain the ignition safety switch
A band/cord attatched to the drivers hip or wrist that kills the engine if they fall off.
**prohibits the engine from starting unless the transmission is in the proper position. For manual transmissions it’s actually a switch operated by the clutch.
How far must you stay away from a diver-down flag?
100-200 feet
How does alcohol affect a consumer while on the water?
Same as it affects a boater. The affects are so much increased on the water that it only takes a third of the amount of alcohol to make them drunk on land to make them equally as drunk on the water.
