Duties of the anchor watch
- Take a visual fix on your position with the anchor line in front of you; note what is directly in front of you, what is 90 degrees to your left; and 90 degrees to your right
- Notify coxswain if anchor is holding or if drifting
Watch for dragging anchor, changing weather
What is the anchor rode?
The chain and line of the anchor.
How much anchor line should you deploy to properly anchor a boat?

Describe Sound Signals
Short Blast = 1 second
Prolonged blast = 4-6 seconds
Danger signal = 5 short blasts or more
One prolonged blast = leaving area bow first
Three short blasts = leaving area stern first
What does one short blast sound signal mean?
- If you are meeting the boat, your port is going to pass their port
- If you are passing a boat, your port is going to pass their starboard
What does two short blasts sound signal mean?
- If you are meeting a boat, your starboard is going to pass on their starboard.
- If you are passing a boat, your starboard is going to pass their starboard.
Describe the navigation lights.
- Port side - red
- Starboard side - green
- Stern - White; must be 3 feet above side lights
- Masthead - white; must be used by all boats when under power. A masthead light means a white light placed over the fore (front) and aft (also called stern, back) centerline of the vessel showing an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon.
