Talk through primary survey of an adult

A
  • Danger (look for danger)
  • Response (shout in both ears, shake the shoulders)
  • Airways (check the airway is clear - push the head back and look down the throat)
  • Breathing (listen for breaths, looks for chest rising)
  • Circulation (look for bleeding)

Talk through the process of CPR on an adult

A
  • Ask someone to call 999, and bring an AED
  • 30 compressions
  • 2 rescue breaths (100-120bpm close nose and look for chest to rise)
  • Use of AED (switch on side, press on but not red button until the ECG says to)
  • Stop if: emergency help comes, they respond, you become exhausted, the AEG tells you to stop

Talk through the process of CPR on a child

A
  • DR ABC
  • Call for help
  • Tilt head back and lift chin with fingertip. Look for obstructions
  • Put lips around the mouth and nose, chest should rise and fall. Repeat 5 times (initial rescue breaths)
  • CPR 2 fingers at rate of 100-120bpm for 30 pumps
  • Open the airway and give 2 puffs
  • Continue ratio of 30:2
  • If no speaker phone - stop after 1 minute and call

Talk through reaction to a choking adult

A
  • Ask are you choking, try to cough. Encourage to continue to cough
  • Support upper body with one hand, and bend forward
  • Use heel of hand to administer 5 back blows
  • If this doesn’t work give 5 abdominal thrusts. Put arms around them, lower hand in fist upper hand over the top, pull upwards and inwards
  • Once again ask if they can cough
  • Call 999 if still not helped

Talk through reaction to a choking child

A
  • Unable to cry, cough or breathe
  • Administer back blows (lay face down on thigh, supporting head and neck. Give 5 back blows with heel of the hand)
  • Turn over so lying face up, support neck and head
  • Administer 5 chest thrusts using 2 fingers
  • Call 999 if this doesnt work
