BLS Flashcards
Initial action for any injured patient (adult or child)
- verify seen safety by:
- check for responsiveness
- activate emergency response system via mobile device
- Get AED and emergency equipment or send someone to do so (not necessary unless you witness a sudden collapse in a peds patient)
After verifying seen safety, what is the next step for an adult?
Look for breathing and definite feeling of pulses
how long do you check for a pulse in an adult?
for 10 seconds
has to be definitive pulse!
If there is normal breathing and pulse in an adult, what do you do?
Monitor until emergency responders arrive
If there is NO normal breathing, but pulse is felt in adult, what do you do and how frequent?
Provide rescue breathing
a) 1 breath every 6 seconds
b) Check for pulse every 2 minutes to verify it is there (if not continue CPR)
c) adminster narcan if opioid OD
If there is no breathing (or only gasping) + no pulse, what do you do for adult?
Start CPR
30 compressions and 2 breaths
Wait for AED to arrive
Once an AED arrives, what do they do after CPR in adult
check rhythm to see if it is shockable
If a rhythm is shockable for an adult, what do you do?
1 shock
CPR for 2 minutes
Continue this cycle
If a rhythm is NOT shockable for an adult, what do you do?
Resume CPR for 2 minutes without shocking
keep checking the rhythm
After verifying seen safety, what do you do for a pediatric patient?
SAME AS ADULT
Look for breathing and definite feeling of pulses for 10 seconds
If there is normal breathing and pulse in a peds, what do you do?
Same as adult
monitor until EMS
What to do if there is no normal breathing but pulse felt in peds?
Provide rescue breathing
1 breath every 2-3 seconds or 20-30 breaths per min
assess pulse for no more than 10 seconds
After assessing pulse, what are you looking for for a peds patient
HR < 60 BPM with signs of poor perfusion
what to do if HR < 60 BPM with signs of poor perfusion in peds patient
Start CPR
what to do if HR is not < 60 BPM OR there are no signs of poor perfusion in peds patient?
Continue rescue breathing and check pulse every 2 minutes
if pulse disappears, start CPR
