BLS Flashcards
First step to BLS
Verify scene safety
After verifying scene safety, what are the initial steps for BLS?
- Check for responsiveness
- Shout for nearby help
- Activate emergency response system (e.g. call 911)
- Get AED and emergency equipment
- Evaluate breathing/pulse
How long should you check for a pulse before starting CPR?
No more than 10 seconds
What should you do if you feel a pulse, but there is no breathing (or only gasping)?
- Provide rescue breathing (1 breath every 6 seconds)
- Check pulse every 2 min
- Check pupils (administer naloxone if pinpoint)
How frequent should rescue breaths be administered (when there is still a pulse)?
1 breath every 6 seconds
When should the AED be applied to the pt?
As soon as it is available (stop compressions to administer shock if needed)
What is compression/breath frequency in CPR?
30 compressions and 2 breaths
Note: Pause CPR every 2 min to allow for a rhythm check (and possible shock).
What is the appropriate rate of compressions for infants?
100-120 compressions per minute (same as adults)
How deep should chest compressions be on an infant?
1.5 inches (4 cm)
Note: This is less than the 2 inches for children/adults.
What is the compression:ventilation ratio for infants and children?
15:2 (if 2 or more rescuers)
30:2 (if 1 rescuer)
Where should you place your hands to perform compressions on a child?
Lower half of sternum
Rate of rescue breaths for child with abnormal breathing and a normal pulse
Every 2-3 seconds (20-30 breaths per minute)
While administering rescue breaths, HR drops below 60 beats/min and you notice signs of poor perfusion…
Start CPR
If you witness a child go into cardiac arrest, how does this change the single rescuer CPR algorithm?
You activate the emergency response system and retrieve the AED before beginning compressions
Note: If the cardiac arrest is unwitnessed, you perform 2 min of CPR prior to activating EMS and retrieving the AED (if still alone).
What is the preferred method for a pulse check in an infant?
2-3 fingers on the inside of the upper arm (midway between the elbow and shoulder)
