BLOOOOOOD Flashcards
Hematopoiesis
Process of forming all blood cells and WBC’s
Hematopoietic tissues
Liver (during gestation), yolk sac for first 3 months, spleen some until birth. After, bone marrow
Formed elements
RBC’s, WBC’s, platelets
% blood volume for RBC’s
41-53 (male) 36-46 (female)
% blood volume for WBC’s
1%
% blood volume for plasma
49-64%
What is plasma made of?
Water (90%), protein (7%), inorganic ions (.9%)
What proteins are found in plasma?
Albumin, globulins, fibrinogen and prothrombin
What is serum?
Platelet derived growth factors, but devoid of other clotting factors
Erythrocyte
Biconcave, carry oxygen and carbon dioxide bound to hemoglobin. Anucleate, life span of 120 days.
Macrocyte
RBC > 9 microns in diameter, due to lack of folic acid
Microcyte
RBC
Reticulocyte
Immature RBC, stained residual DNA, 1-2% of RBC’s
Neutrophil
1800-7700/microliter, most common WBC (50-70%), lifespan of 6-7 days. 2-5 lobes.
Lymphocyte
1k-4800/microliter, 18-42%, grow when activated. T cells (60-80%), B cells (20-30%), or NK cells
